Since the discovery of the various photographic media, people have referred to the photographic image as a “window onto the world”. So how transparent was and is this window? And how do film, photography and television portray our reality? News coverages and documentaries both tell stories according to specific narrative conventions. As a result, they do not provide us with an objective image of reality.
In Breaking News seven artists will present their interpretation of the relationship between reality and the portrayal thereof. Their collective work will be screened during the Biënnale. Through an ongoing dialogue with these artists, the Filmmuseum stimulates alternative approaches to the research and presentation of archival footage.
